We get asked about Shopify Plus most often when a business hits a wall. A wholesale customer wants their own price list. The checkout needs a rule nobody can build. A launch day nearly took the site down. Someone in the team says the answer must be Plus.
Sometimes it is. Shopify Plus is worth it when you'll use what it adds, and those features earn more than they cost. That usually means serious B2B, custom checkout logic, more catalogues or headroom for big trading peaks. If none of those apply, a well built store on your current plan will often do more for you than the upgrade.
Start with the problem, not the plan
The most useful question isn't whether you're big enough. It's what you'd do on Plus on day one that you can't do now.
If the answer is a list of specific jobs, you're in the right conversation. If the answer is "grow faster", slow down. Plus doesn't fix a slow theme, a messy catalogue or unclear product pages. Those problems travel with you.
We ask businesses to write down the three things they'd change first. That list tells us far more than turnover does.
Where Plus usually earns its place
In our work, a handful of needs come up again and again when Plus is the right call.
- Wholesale that needs structure. Company accounts, catalogues with trade pricing and payment terms, so each buyer sees their own deal.
- Checkout logic that's specific to you. Rules about payment, delivery or discounts that go beyond standard settings.
- More catalogues and a dedicated trade storefront. When retail and wholesale need clearly separate experiences.
- Volume headroom. Flash sales, drops and seasonal peaks where the store has to hold steady under pressure.
B2B is a good example of how Plus keeps adding depth. In October Shopify gave Plus stores rules for which B2B orders need review. High value or first orders can go to draft while repeat orders go straight through. That kind of control matters to a wholesaler, and means little to a small consumer brand.
What does a Plus store look like in practice?
Two of our published projects show different reasons for Plus.
Star Action Figures is a UK collectibles retailer with over 4,000 products across 114 franchises. The move to Shopify Plus came with complicated requirements around pre-orders, payments and shipping. We built checkout protection so collectors don't end up with confusing mixed orders, and ship dates are visible before anyone pays.
Fáilte Foods is a Scottish food wholesaler. We moved them from Magento to Shopify Plus with Business Central, date based pricing and a favourites list for reordering. Customer onboarding rose by over 500%, and conversion sits above 30%.
One is consumer retail with complex orders. The other is pure trade. Plus fitted both because each had a clear job for it.
When a standard plan is the better choice
Plus isn't a badge. For plenty of growing businesses, staying put is the smart move.
- Your catalogue is straightforward and your checkout needs are standard.
- You sell mainly to consumers, with no real wholesale channel.
- Traffic is growing steadily rather than arriving in huge spikes.
- Your biggest gains would come from speed, product pages or merchandising.
If that's you, the budget is usually better spent on the store itself. A faster theme, a clearer product structure or a proper look at conversion will move the numbers sooner. Our walkthrough of what happens in a Shopify design and build shows where that budget goes. Our note on Black Friday on Shopify shows how much stability comes from process, not plan.
How to make the decision
Put the upgrade through the same test as any other investment.
- List the specific Plus features you'd use in the first six months.
- Estimate what each one is worth in revenue, saved team time or reduced risk.
- Check the current Plus pricing with Shopify, since it depends on your setup.
- Add the build cost of the features themselves. Plus unlocks tools, it doesn't configure them.
- Compare the total with the value from step two.
If the numbers are close, wait and revisit in six months. If they're clearly in favour, plan the upgrade alongside the work that uses it. Many businesses also face the question of whether to run trade and retail together. Our guide to B2B and DTC in one store or two helps with that part.
Where parallel helps
We build on Shopify and Shopify Plus, and we'll tell you honestly which fits. If Plus is right, we'll plan the upgrade around the features you need. If it isn't, we'll show you where the budget will do more. See how we approach Shopify design and build and B2B commerce.
