We work with businesses that need tight control of who sees a price and a product. Shopify's B2B tools have improved. The platform still assumes products want to be discovered.
That shows up in a place a lot of wholesale teams miss.
Products in the Shop app
Shop is Shopify's consumer shopping app. On a B2B store we tested, products meant for approved customers were visible there. Wholesale prices were visible. People without an account could browse product data.
While fixing that, we found the flag does more than most merchants think.
What seo.hidden actually does
Most people treat seo.hidden as an SEO setting. In practice it behaves like a distribution flag.
When a product has seo.hidden set to 1, Shopify treats it as not for broad discovery. From our testing, and from behaviour Shopify developers have confirmed, that includes:
- Removal from the Shop app home feed and Shop search.
- Exclusion from Shopify's internal catalogue used for recommendations.
- Exclusion from some Storefront API discovery queries and feeds that follow Shopify's canonical catalogue.
You are not only hiding a page from Google. You are telling Shopify not to promote that product outside the storefront you control.
What still works
The product remains available by direct URL. It can still appear in collections. Approved customers can still buy it. Admin, orders and operations are unchanged.
Your storefront keeps working.
Why B2B teams use it
You can keep a public site for marketing. You can gate the catalogue behind accounts. You can stop prices leaking into consumer discovery. You do not have to pull the whole store out of Shopify's ecosystem.
How to set it
The metafield has to be exact.
- Namespace: seo
- Key: hidden
- Type: integer
- Value: 1
A boolean does not trigger the same behaviour reliably. For large catalogues, bulk edit. Allow 24 to 48 hours for the change to spread.
When not to use it
Do not apply seo.hidden if those products need to rank in Google. Do not use it on a hybrid catalogue where the same SKUs must be public. Do not use it on products that depend on Shopify recommendations.
Removing the metafield restores visibility. That also takes up to 48 hours.
This is a precise tool for B2B catalogues. It is a poor default. If you are unsure whether your wholesale products are already in Shop, ask us to look.
