ERP integration
Shopify and Business Central, telling the same story.
Products, customers, prices and orders synced between Shopify and Business Central. The ERP stays the system of record.
Business Central is the ERP we connect most often for UK and European wholesale. The store can look finished and still be wrong if stock, price or the customer account lives somewhere else.
Fáilte Foods is the published example. Wholesale moved from Magento to Shopify Plus, with Business Central keeping orders and customers in sync.
Why this link gets built
Merchants search for a Shopify Business Central integration when the shop and the finance system disagree. A customer sees stock the warehouse does not have. A trade price in Shopify does not match the price book.
Connectors exist. They cover the happy path. They struggle with company accounts, several locations, and the order that has to land as a sales order with the right customer number.
We map the fields, test the failures, and stay after go live. The integration is not finished when the first product appears.
What usually breaks
Customers and companies
A Shopify customer is not always a Business Central customer. Wholesale needs the company, the contacts and the payment terms. We map those before the first trade order.
Prices
Retail price and customer price lists do not share one field. The wrong list on the storefront is a quiet way to lose margin.
Stock locations
Available stock is not the same as on-hand stock. We agree which number Shopify is allowed to sell.
Orders
Taxes, shipping and discounts have to land on the sales order in a shape finance will accept. A pretty JSON payload that accounting rejects is a failed integration.
Timeline and cost
Week 1
Field map for products, customers, prices, stock and orders. Named owner on the Business Central side.
Weeks 2 to 4
Sync into a staging company or a sandbox. Failures logged, not swallowed.
Weeks 4 to 6
A real trade order and a retail order rehearsed through to invoice.
Go live
Cutover with someone who can see both systems. The first day's orders are reconciled by hand.
An ERP integration is usually part of a build or migration in the £20,000 to £35,000 range, plus a monthly retainer so the sync is watched after go live. A single, well documented connector sits lower. Several price lists, warehouses and a custom order flow sit higher.
Checklist
- Name the Business Central company and who administers it.
- List price lists that Shopify must respect.
- Agree the stock figure that is safe to sell.
- Decide how company accounts are created.
- Rehearse one wholesale order and one retail order.
- Put a retainer in place so breaks are caught after launch.
Business Central questions
Do you use a connector or custom code?
Whichever the process needs. A connector is right when the map is standard. Custom code is right when company accounts, locations or order rules are specific to you.
Can Business Central stay the system of record?
Yes. That is the usual design. Shopify sells. Business Central holds customers, stock and the financial record.
