Fáilte Foods left Magento for Shopify Plus as they moved onto Business Central. Customer onboarding rose by over 500%. Conversion sits above 30%. Trade buyers can order without starting on the phone.

B2B food wholesale. Shopify Plus. Business Central.

## The problem

Fáilte is a leading Scottish food wholesaler. The relationships and the product knowledge were already there. The online shop was not keeping up with either.

Magento sat apart from the business. An order on the site did not land in the ERP by itself. Someone retyped it. Stock on the website and stock in Business Central could disagree. A buyer ordered a line, then heard it was gone. The shop added a queue. It did not remove one.

The account was a retail login on a wholesale job. A trade buyer reorders the same lines. They need their price, a delivery date they can plan around, and a history of what they bought. Magento was not built as that desk.

A new trade account meant paperwork, then a wait, then a person. Existing buyers tolerated it because they already knew the company. New buyers phoned. The site was not how an account started.

The team could not change the shop on their own. A product, a promotion or a price for a new customer type waited on a developer.

They needed one set of books, and an order flow a wholesaler would recognise. Getting onto the platform should not start with a form in the post.

## What we did

- Companies, customers, products and order history moved from Magento to Shopify Plus.
- Business Central connected, so orders, customers, stock and prices stay in step.
- Pricing by account and by delivery date, shown before checkout.
- A favourites list, so a regular order does not start with a search.
- A theme for wholesale. The account, the history and a large order in one sitting.
- Self-service for registration, order status and invoices.
- Placements and collections arranged for how a buyer refills, not how a retail shopper browses.
- Existing accounts kept through cutover. Magento passwords were not copied across.

## The detail

### The ERP was still being switched on

Fáilte had just moved to Business Central when the Shopify work started. Price rules, customer groups and warehouse stock were still being set. A shop launched on half-finished data would have shown the wrong price and the wrong stock on day one.

We checked what left Business Central and what arrived in Shopify. Products, prices and customers were tested until the store matched the ERP. It is quiet work. It is the week the first trade order depends on.

After that, Business Central stays the source. A price change, a stock movement or a change to a customer's terms is what the shop shows. The team do not keep a second product file in Shopify.

A normal order goes through to Business Central and into fulfilment without someone typing it again. An unusual order is the one a person still handles.

### A wholesale desk, not a shop with a password

A trade buyer thinks in repeat lines, account prices and delivery windows. We built the theme around that.

They sign in to an account. Recent orders, favourites and history are there, with the terms on the account. A line they buy every week is saved, so the next order does not mean hunting the catalogue. A larger basket across categories can be entered in bulk, not one product page at a time.

The price is the price for that account and that delivery date. It is on the page before they pay. There is no retail sticker to translate in their head.

### The customers who already ordered

A group of buyers used Magento every week. Their history and their account had to be there on the new shop. If the history vanished, the best customers would have felt the change as a loss.

Order history, accounts and purchase data moved. An existing buyer could sign in and see the orders they expected. Credit and the account preferences came with them.

Passwords did not. A password should not travel between systems. Existing buyers set a new one from a link in an email. One step, then the history was in front of them.

### Signing up without the paperwork

A new trade buyer used to send a form and wait. The new path is on the store. They register, give the company details, and the account can be approved straight away or held for a person, depending on the type of customer. The default is the short path.

Once they are in, they can see an order, open an invoice and run the account without a ticket. The phone call that used to start a first order is no longer the only door.

Grant Rennie, Director, wrote about the move from Magento and about the work that continued after launch, on retention and sales. His review is on this page.

## The results

Onboarding rose by over 500%. The path from "I want a trade account" to "I can order" got shorter, so new buyers used it instead of only using the phone.

Conversion sits above 30%. These are trade buyers with an account, not casual visits. When they arrive, a large share of them place the order. Repeat ordering is what the number is made of.

Returning buyers had their history, a favourites list and a price they recognised. Reordering became ordinary. Existing customers stayed through the change because the account they knew was still there.

The team can merchandise, run a promotion and bring a customer on without a developer for every change. The platform can take more accounts without a matching growth in the support queue. The weekly order is the platform's job. The team keep the exceptions.

A buyer refilling the week opens the account, not a catalogue from scratch. Favourites are the lines they already trust. The delivery date is part of the price, so the order matches the van. That is why conversion can sit above 30%. The visit is already a buying visit.

Onsite placements sit in the same shop. A line they should see this week can lead, without the account turning into a retail homepage. A promotion is a merchandising decision. It is not a development ticket.

## The stack

Platform: Shopify Plus, from Magento.
ERP: Microsoft Business Central, for orders, customers, stock and prices.
Pricing: by account and by delivery date.
Ordering: favourites, reorder and bulk entry.
Theme: built for a wholesale account, not a retail catalogue.
After launch: the same engagement, on retention and sales.

## The weekly order, without the phone call

A buyer needs the week supplied. They open the account, reorder the lines they always buy, check the price and the delivery date, and send it. Business Central takes the order. Nobody retypes it.

A new customer registers on the store. Approval is either immediate or reviewed. They are then in the same account, with the same price logic. The first order does not depend on a sales call to begin.
