  - question: Can you A/B test discounts on Shopify?
answer: Yes. Since the 2nd of October 2026, you can add discounts to a Rollout and run it as an experiment. Experiments are available on the Grow plan and above. You then review conversion results to decide which offer to keep.
  - question: How many discounts can I add to a Shopify Rollout?
answer: Shopify's help centre says you can add up to 250 discounts to a single Rollout. Each discount can only sit in one unended Rollout at a time, so plan which campaign owns which offer.
  - question: Do discount start and end dates still work with Rollouts?
answer: Yes. A discount's own active dates apply independently of the Rollout. If you want the Rollout to control timing, check the discount's dates don't contradict it.

Every autumn we see the same discount debate on Shopify stores. Is 20% off better than free delivery? Should the offer go live at midnight or with the new homepage? Usually someone picks, and nobody finds out if it was right.

Shopify Rollouts now answers more of that inside the admin. Since the 2nd of October 2026, you can add discounts to a Rollout. That means you can schedule an offer, test it against your current offers and launch it alongside theme and checkout changes. It's well timed, with Black Friday on the 27th of November.

## What did Shopify change?

The [changelog entry](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/schedule-and-test-discounts-with-rollouts) lists three new jobs for discounts in Rollouts.

- Schedule discount changes. Launch an offer to a portion of online store traffic, then expand it when you're ready.
- Compare offers. Test a discount change against your existing offers and review conversion results before you choose.
- Launch changes together. Put a discount in the same Rollout as theme and checkout changes, so everything goes live at once.

Existing customer eligibility rules still apply. You can also keep using start and end dates for standalone promotions.

If you haven't used Rollouts before, our post on [scheduling and testing theme changes with Rollouts](/insights/shopify-rollouts-schedule-theme-changes) covers the basics. You'll find it under Markets, then Rollouts.

## Which Shopify plans can use it?

Shopify's [help centre](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/rollouts) sets out the split. Rollouts are available on the Basic plan or higher. Experiments, where you compare a change against a control, need the Grow plan or higher.

So a Basic store can schedule a discount to launch with a new homepage. Testing one offer against another needs Grow, Advanced or Plus.

## The details worth knowing before you build a campaign

The help centre lists a few rules that change how you plan.

1. A discount can only be part of one unended Rollout at a time. Reusing the same code across two overlapping campaigns won't work.
2. You can add up to 250 discounts to a single Rollout. That's plenty for a full sale, with room for tiered and product-specific offers.
3. In an experiment, the control includes no discount from the Rollout. You're measuring the offer against what shoppers see without it.
4. A discount's own active dates apply independently of the Rollout. If the dates and the Rollout disagree, the result can surprise you.
5. Rollouts that reach less than 100% of visitors apply to the online store only. Vintage themes aren't supported, and theme and checkout changes don't cover headless storefronts.

Staff permissions matter too. Anyone managing a Rollout with discounts needs Rollouts access plus the discount permissions. Check this before the person running your campaign needs it.

## How we'd use it before Black Friday

Peak season is the best reason to use this, and the riskiest. Our [Black Friday code freeze checklist](/insights/black-friday-shopify-code-freeze) still applies. Scheduling makes planned changes safer. It doesn't make a late change safe.

We'd work through it in this order.

- Test in October, not November. Run an offer experiment now, while trading is normal. You'll learn something useful without risking the busiest weekend.
- Ask one question per test. Compare two offers, or an offer against no offer. Don't change the homepage in the same experiment.
- Choose the measure first. Conversion rate is the obvious one. Margin matters more, so check revenue and order value before you crown a winner.
- Build the Black Friday Rollout early. Put the discounts, homepage, banners and checkout changes in one Rollout with a start and end time.
- Check dates twice. Make sure each discount's own active dates match the Rollout, so nothing runs early or overstays.

That last point is where we see campaigns slip. On [Forty Clothing](/work/forty-clothing), product launches, sales and Black Friday were part of the work we planned and ran. A single scheduled launch for theme and offer takes a lot of stress out of that calendar.

## What this means for wholesale and international stores

If you sell in more than one country, Rollouts sits alongside [discounts by market](/insights/shopify-discounts-by-market). A market discount controls who can use an offer. A Rollout controls when it goes live and whether you test it first. Used together, a European promotion can launch on its own schedule without touching your UK store.

For stores running B2B, keep the eligibility rules in view. Shopify says existing customer eligibility still applies inside a Rollout. A trade offer assigned to your B2B buyers should stay with them, but test the buyer journey on a trade account before launch.

## Where parallel helps

A testing tool is only as good as the questions you put through it. Someone still has to choose the offer, build the change cleanly and read the result honestly.

That's what we do for stores on [Shopify support and growth](/services/support). Optimise and Accelerate include monthly improvements and a performance report. Our [Growth subscription](/services/growth-subscription) adds a monthly conversion review against a KPI baseline, which suits a run of discount tests.
